An Education in Escape: Dame Bovary and Reading
A theme during Flaubert's Madame Bovary can be escape vs confinement. In the novel Emma Bovary efforts again and again to flee the ordinariness of her life by simply reading works of fiction, having affairs, day fantasizing, moving by town to town, and purchasing luxuries things. It is Emma's early education described intended for an entire section by Flaubert that awakens in Emma a struggle against what she perceives since confinement. Emma's education on the convent just might be the most significant development of the dichotomy in the novel between confinement and avoid. The convent is Emma's earliest confinement, and it is the few solicitations from the outside world that plot Emma, the books smuggled in to the convent or the sound of a far away cab going along arrivee.
